Why previewing changes the design
A thumbnail sitting alone on a big screen looks nothing like a thumbnail competing in a feed. On a phone in search results, yours is about 160 pixels wide, next to a title, surrounded by other videos fighting for the same glance. Text that felt bold at full size turns into a grey smear.
The previews here are built at those real widths, on YouTube's own white and dark backgrounds, with a duration stamp in the corner where YouTube puts one. If your main subject or your words survive all four, the design is done. If they do not, you have found the problem before the video went out rather than a week later.
The checks above the previews cover the mechanical rules too: 16:9 ratio, at least 1280 pixels wide, and under YouTube's 2MB file limit. Those three reject more uploads than anything else.

Is my thumbnail uploaded to your server?+
No. The preview is drawn from the file on your own device using your browser, and the image is discarded when you close the page. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
Which preview size matters most?+
The mobile search result, at roughly 160 pixels wide. More than half of YouTube viewing happens on phones, and that is the smallest your thumbnail will ever be shown. If it reads there, it reads everywhere.
Why does my text disappear at small sizes?+
Almost always because there is too much of it, or it has no outline. Three to five words at a very large size, with an outline and shadow behind them, survive the shrink. Long sentences never do.
Can I test a thumbnail that is already on YouTube?+
