YouTube Thumbnail Size and Rules, Explained Simply

Thumbnails have exactly one job: earn the click against every other video on the page. Before any design decision, the file itself has to meet YouTube's requirements, and they are stricter than most people expect.

The requirements

The 2MB limit trips people up most. A detailed PNG at high resolution can pass it easily, and YouTube simply refuses the upload. If that happens, export as JPG instead, or simplify the image: fewer gradients and photos, more flat colour.

• Resolution: 1280 x 720 recommended, minimum width 640 pixels
• Aspect ratio: 16:9, the ratio every player and search result uses
• Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP
• File size: under 2MB for videos
• Custom thumbnails require a verified YouTube account (phone verification)

Why 1280 by 720 and not bigger

YouTube scales your thumbnail down for almost every place it appears. On a phone search result it renders at barely 160 pixels wide. Designing at 1280 by 720 keeps you honest: if text is readable there at a glance, it survives the shrink. A 4K export is useful for channel art elsewhere, a video end screen, or print, but the upload itself needs nothing beyond 1280 by 720 and the 2MB ceiling.
